20-year-old pays for multiple streaming services using 27-year-old brother's card, protests when he cancels them without warning: 'I saw several charges I didn't recognize'

It can be tempting to let somebody else foot the bill without them knowing.

This is one of the dangers of our convenience-based society, where every device we own is linked up to our bank details: all it takes is one opportunistic person to decide that they don't want to pay for something, and all of a sudden, your hard-earned dollars seem to be disappearing without explanation. Too many of us do not learn the lesson of being careful about our financial safety until it is too late.

What's worse is that the people who take advantage of this kind of thing can often be those whom you trust the most. Family members can prove to be your worst enemy when it comes to matters of money, usually because they think that they can use you for it without facing any consequences. It goes without saying that, even putting aside the ethical implications, this is a bad decision to make. The amount involved doesn't always matter, as it is the breach of trust and the ensuing disagreement that is going to cause the real problems. Nobody wants to think that somebody they are closely related to is using them for money.

  • In this story, an older brother paid a very literal price when his college-aged sister was staying with him. He agreed to let her move in while she was going through a difficult time, allowing her to log on to his TV, which was connected to his debit card.

    As it turns out, she took the liberty of purchasing three extra streaming services with his money. When confronted, she claimed that he shouldn't care that much about it, as they didn't cost a lot. 

    In retaliation, the brother immediately canceled his subscriptions to all these services. She was upset, and their parents backed her up, but he wanted to know if he had really done something wrong.

  • noirivyn She didn't forget to tell you, she just assumed you wouldn't notice or care. You didn't go too far; you installed a basic consequence for theft. Her excuse about studying and being embarrassed in front of friends is just noise to distract from the fact she got caught. Tell your parents the conversation happened, she called you dramatic, and now she gets to learn that financial boundaries aren't a joke.

  • mentat70 it's ironic when people claim you are being dramatic after they have stolen your money. She stole from you and rationalized it by telling herself that it is ok because you make more money than hef and it wasn't that much. So, in her world she's created, she's entitled to steal from anyone who has more than her. Nice.
